CrowdStrike, a leading cybersecurity firm, recently faced a global technical outage, causing major disruptions to its services. This incident affected numerous customers, limiting their access to CrowdStrike’s security solutions and raising concerns within the cybersecurity community.

Immediate Steps for Resolution

CrowdStrike has proposed a solution to mitigate the issue. Users should reboot their systems in safe mode and delete a specific driver file. Follow these detailed steps:

  1. Attach a Recovery Disk: Ensure that you have successfully attached a recovery disk to your system.
  2. Delete the File: Navigate to the directory Windows/System/System32/Drivers/CrowdStrike/ and delete the file named C00000291*.sys.

These steps are recommended by both CrowdStrike and external cybersecurity experts.

Widespread Disruptions Across Sectors

Air Travel Delays

Travelers may face significant delays as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has grounded major airlines, including United, Delta, and American Airlines, with Ryanair also affected. Passengers are advised to check the Ryanair app for updates and arrive at the airport three hours before their flight.

Edinburgh Airport and Berlin Airport are experiencing longer wait times due to the outage, and numerous other airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, and airports across Spain, are also impacted.

Healthcare Service Interruptions

In the UK, patients are struggling to book appointments at GP offices. Putneymead GP surgery in West London reports restricted online requests and downed phone lines. The NHS has confirmed disruptions to the EMIS system used for patient records and appointments.

Train Service Delays

Train services are also disrupted, particularly those operated by Govia Thameslink and other major providers like Avanti West Coast and Great Western Railway. Customers are advised to check for travel updates online.
